CONTINENTAL – Quartet for Clarinets

Quartet for Clarinets by Oscar Navarro

Clarinet quartet created in 1999 and premiered in the Chamber Music Series of the Murcia Youth Orchestra.

Continental is a musical suite divided in four movements and inspired in the different musical styles of the four continents. Starting by Europe, the first movement represents Spanish music, full of rhythms and a touch of gipsy-like harmony.

Following the sequence, a Russian dance takes us to the Asian continent, inspired by the traditional Russian dances.

The third movement represents Africa. Navarro attempts to describe the vast plains and the grandiosity of the continent, with soft melodies that also hint at the poverty of this territory.

Finally, America, where a series of cowboy themes based on the wild West interact with the rhythms of Indian drums. The last theme of the piece will take us back to Europe, with the same music that represented Spain in the beginning.
